Blue Collar Weekly: Jaden Schwartz

(NHL photo)

Welcome to Blue Collar Weekly where I choose one lucky Blues hockey player to wear the Blue Collar of greatness for a week. I will judge the players by their elevated game-play and heavy stats. I will also mention other favorable stats from the current regular season, career highs, and milestones.

This week,” the Blue-Collar goes to…”

Jaden Schwartz

After a surprising 26 game run in the playoffs last year which led the Blues to capturing their first ever Stanley Cup, Jaden Schwartz has almost replicated the start of the season as he did last year. Lets take a look at last seasons first 20 games versus the current 2019-20 totals.

2018-19 First 20 games

Schwartz had 14 points (3 g 11 a) on 44 shots. He also had 21 hits and 13 blocked shots.

2019-20 First 20 games

The first 20 games of 1019-20 are almost identical to last year’s statistics. The 5ft 190 lb Saskatchewan native has 16 points (4 g 12 a) on 41 shots. He also produced 6 hits and 9 blocks.

Side Note: There is a difference in hits and blocks for Schwartz, though. His total hits have dropped by 15 this year. His blocked shots have also dropped by 4.

Schwartz heating up in the last 10

The veteran forward has historically been known for his slow starts and subsequently hasn’t been able to replicate the big early numbers that he accomplished at the start of the 2017-18 season (25 points in 20 games).

But I must say judging from his recent play in the last ten games, Jaden is really coming on strong. He has been shown that speed and hard work ethic that made him so valuable in last year’s playoff run. (He scored 20 points in 26 playoff games)

He has 7 points(4 g 3 a) in his last ten games. In addition, he has 6 hits and 5 blocked shots.

Banged up Blues need the hard-grinding Schwartz back from that 2018-19 Cup Run!

When #17 is at his best he seems to play with that edge and wears down his opponents. For example, Jaden had 52 hits and scored 20 points(12 g 8 a) in all 26 games of their storied Cup run. Compare that to the 61 hits he had in 69 regular-season games and you understand the level of competitiveness he was exuding.

With injuries to Tarasenko, Steen, and now Sammy Blais, the winger will have to elevate his game all the more. I believe there is another level to Jaden Schwartz and I think now is the time to see this from a veteran player like himself.

Congratulations to Jaden Schwartz for being awarded the “Blue Collar” winner this time around! I’m sure #17 will win many more!

My Questions:

  • What will the line combinations look like now that Sammy Blais is out for 10 weeks until being evaluated?
  • Will the 34 yr old Troy Brouwer make an immediate impact on the score-sheet?
  • Will players’ ice time be spread out evenly?
  • Does Jacob De la Rose become a factor or do the Blues bring up more youngsters from the Rampage?
  • If the depth does not come through in the next couple weeks do the Blues make a small trade to fill the gaps?
  • Which veteran player will step up and lighten the load by producing at a higher level?
  • Does Klim Kostin become a dominant force in the NHL?

I have developed a new game by game graphic/stat coverage called “Besancenez’s HARD-GRINDER of the night” (its a hybrid award similar to the 3 stars of the game and a hard hat award) except there’s only one winner!
