Alex Pietrangelo and Colton Parayko. They both play the right side. In my eyes, they’re both top pairing defensemen. Some may want to see Colton slide up there in Pietrangelo’s place, but I want to explain to you why Alex Pietrangelo remains on the 1st pairing at all times when healthy.
First of all, the Captain has played 658 NHL games. Alex has 85 goals and 292 assists for 377 points. Colton Parayko, on the other hand, has 28 goals and 90 assists for 118 points in 294 NHL games. Parayko hasn’t played half as many games in his career as Pietrangelo, nor does he have half as many career points.
Colton will easily break his career high of 9 goals this season. He has 9 right now with 6 assists for 15 points in 52 games. But, he only scored 4 goals in 2016-17. He upped it to 6 goals in 2017-18.
Only 6 of Parayko’s 90 assists have come in his last 52 games. Colton registered a career-high 31 assists in 2016-17. He came close to that with 29 assists in 2017-18. His rookie year, he assisted 24 goals.
Alex Pietrangelo scored 15 goals for a career-high in 2017-18. The year before, he scored 14. He had 11 goals in 2010-11 and 12 goals in 2011-12. He has a career high in assists of 43 set in the 2013-14 season. He’s assisted over 30 goals per season 6 other times too.
Pietrangelo has managed to score more than 50 points three times in his career. Parayko has a career-high of 35 points. He’s done it twice. Colton had 33 points in his rookie year.
This is Colton Parayko’s 4th season in the NHL. He’s 25 years old.
Again, take a look at 29-year-old Alex Pietrangelo’s resume.
